Price is off the table, which leaves the real question: hosted or local. A hosted app can do things on your behalf while you are not there — send the invoice, chase it, collect payment, run a recurring schedule, keep a copy for your phone. A local app does nothing when the tab is closed. In return it asks for no account, keeps nothing on anyone's server, works offline and cannot disappear because a vendor changes strategy. Sending is the big one. Zoho Invoice emails the invoice, records when it was viewed, sends reminders on a schedule and lets the client pay through whichever payment gateway you have connected. Estimates can be sent for acceptance and converted into invoices. Recurring invoices go out automatically. Clients get a portal listing everything you have sent them. Time and expenses can be logged and billed. Because the data is on Zoho's servers, the same account works from a phone, and Zoho's other products can read from it.

Simple Invoice offers none of these server-side features, by design rather than omission: without a server there is nothing to send email, take a payment or wake up on a schedule. You attach the PDF or paste the share link into your own email, and you track due dates and write reminders yourself. For a few invoices a month that is a small chore; for dozens it is the reason to choose a hosted tool.

Zoho Invoice has a reasonable gallery of templates and lets you adjust branding, fields and labels. Simple Invoice goes further on structure: the document is a list of blocks you add, remove and reorder, each with its own options, and the whole arrangement is saved as a template. Formatting of money and dates follows an ISO currency code and a locale chosen per invoice, so a client in Berlin and a client in Boston each see numbers written their way. A Zoho account is the price of admission for Zoho Invoice, and your clients' details and invoice history live in it, on Zoho's infrastructure, under Zoho's terms. That brings backups, sync and integration with the rest of the suite. Simple Invoice has no account: data is in your browser's local storage, exportable as JSON, and never leaves the device unless you choose. That is more private and more fragile — clear the browser without a backup and it is gone. Export after each batch of invoices and keep the file somewhere that is itself backed up.

If you want the app to send, remind and collect while you work — and you are comfortable with a Zoho account and Zoho holding the data — Zoho Invoice is a capable free choice. If you want a fast, private invoice generator that produces a well-designed document in a couple of minutes with no sign-up, and you are happy to send it yourself, Simple Invoice is the simpler one. Neither costs anything to try, so the sensible move is to produce one real invoice in each.
