Frequently asked questions about SimpleInvoice
Answers about privacy, saving, PDF and JSON export, share links, templates, currencies and taxes for SimpleInvoice, which runs in your browser.
Getting started
Is SimpleInvoice really free?
Yes. There is no paid tier, no trial and no feature gate. It costs nothing to run because there is no server behind it — the app is static files that execute in your browser.
Do I need an account?
No. Open the editor and start typing. Your current invoice and editor data are kept in this browser's local storage, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to log in to.
How do I make my first invoice?
Open Generate, pick a template, type your details in the From and Bill To blocks, add line items and export a PDF. The step-by-step guide walks through every field.
Can I try it with sample data?
Yes. Open the editor and use its example content to explore the fields, restyle the document and export it before entering your own details.
Privacy and your data
Where is my data stored?
In your browser's local storage, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server — there is no server. Clearing site data removes it, so export the invoice JSON when you need a portable copy.
Can you see my invoices?
No. The app has no backend and never sends invoice contents to analytics. A privacy-friendly script may record that a page was viewed or that you exported a PDF. Your invoice exists only in your browser unless you export or share it.
Can I use it on another computer or phone?
Your data does not sync automatically, because there is no account. Use Export → JSON for a portable invoice file, or copy the self-contained share link and open it on the other device.
How do I make sure I never lose my invoices?
Export the current invoice as JSON whenever you would not want to retype it, and keep issued PDFs separately. Private windows, browser resets and clearing site data all remove local storage.
Editing and templates
What are blocks?
An invoice is an ordered stack of blocks — header, details, parties, items, totals, shipping, payment details, payment link, notes, terms, text, signature, divider, page break and footer. Hide, reorder and configure each one in Generate. The features page describes every block.
Can I save my own template?
Not as a separate template — the editor keeps one invoice document. You can change its blocks, colours, labels and paper, and switch between the ten built-in presets from Templates in the dock; your content stays when you switch.
Can I invoice in a language other than English?
Yes. Every printed label (Invoice, Bill To, Description, Subtotal, Balance due and so on) is editable, and dates can be formatted in any of twenty-five locales. Pick the document language in the Labels panel and every label follows it; rename any label on the current invoice.
How do I add my logo?
Click the header on the invoice and upload it there. PNG, JPEG, WebP and SVG are accepted; raster images are downscaled and kept under a small size limit so storage stays light. See how to add a logo.
Is there undo?
Yes — Cmd/Ctrl+Z and Shift+Cmd/Ctrl+Z work throughout the editor, including for template changes and block removal. Changes are autosaved as you type.
Export, PDF and sharing
How do I get a PDF?
Choose Export → Save as PDF. The browser's print dialog opens with the correct paper size already set; pick Save as PDF as the destination. The layout you see on the canvas is exactly what is exported.
Which print settings should I use?
Destination Save as PDF, paper size matching the template (A4 or Letter), margins None and Background graphics on. Most browsers remember these choices. Safari ignores the automatic page size, so set it by hand there.
What is the JSON export for?
It is a portable copy of the current invoice. Choose Export → JSON to download a file you can keep as an archive or move like any other document.
Currencies, taxes and numbering
Which currencies are supported?
More than sixty ISO codes, each with a sensible default number of decimals. You can also override how the symbol, separators and decimals are displayed per invoice.
How are taxes calculated?
You add one or more taxes with a label and a rate; each is applied to the taxable lines after any discount, independently (no compounding). Whether and how you must charge tax is a question for your accountant — see the tax basics guide.
Can I add a discount?
Yes, per line item (percent or fixed) and for the whole invoice. Discounts are shown in the totals block and reduce the taxable base.
How does invoice numbering work?
Type the invoice number on the document itself — for example INV-0042. Keep the sequence in your own records; the editor does not maintain a multi-invoice counter. Numbering best practices explains the options.
Can I reset the counter every year?
There is no multi-invoice counter to reset. Type the year and sequence you want on the current invoice.
Browsers and limits
Which browsers work?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop. The editor is designed for screens wider than a phone; the print view and shared links work anywhere.
Is there a limit on invoices or clients?
The editor keeps one invoice document at a time. Use it for any client, then export the PDF, JSON file or share link before replacing the document.
Does it work offline?
Once loaded, editing and saving work without a connection because everything is local. Loading the app itself and the fonts needs a connection the first time.
